Alcohol Consumption Marker in Hair
Authentic, cut hair controls in six concentrations
Authentic cut reference material for determination of alcohol consumption markers in hair, manufactured from hair of European alcoholic beverage consumers. It is appropriate for method development and validation as well as for internal quality control. Compared to milled or spiked hair samples these reference material can be washed too. This assures a comprehensive quality control for the entire analytical process. The yield of ethyl glucuronide extracts from these reference material is to be monitored (please see following information). The target values have been established within the bounds of the proficiency tests by the Society of Hair Testing SoHT in cooperation with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) and MEDICHEM. The samples’ homogeneity has been controlled under repeatability conditions.
At present most extraction methods tend to an insufficient yield of ethyl glucuronide. This observation from the proficiency testing 2012 by the SoHT gave reason to re-test several sample lots from 2011 & 2012 within the bounds of the succeeding proficiency testing in 2013. This time however the participating laboratories received not only cut but also milled samples for the interlaboratory test. This re-test confirmed: A majority of laboratories reported a significantly higher ethyl glucuronide yield extracted from milled hair compared to the extraction from cut hair samples – partly in a sizeable amount! A new value assignment has been carried out for these sample lots, solely based upon extracts of milled hair samples (see below). This reflects the updated comment by the SoHT regarding the quantification of EtG in hair for alcohol abuse confirmation (please see SoHT-meeting in Bordeaux 2014).
